BULK LOADING: THE UNMARKED CAN
The cheapest metre of film is the one you do not expose while loading it.
Bulk-loading 35mm film: darkness, cartridge checks, labels and process identity. A practical shooting script in four acts and eight scenes. The steps come first; the reference notes stay in the case file.

ACT 01
Identify the tin
Get the provenance first
Confirm stock, format, perforations and process with the supplier. Cine film is not one chemistry; rem-jet status varies. Check loader and cartridge compatibility. A “35mm” listing does not guarantee smooth transport in a still camera. Keep unidentified material for testing, never hand it to a lab as ordinary C-41.
Exhibit 01 · Ask for the exact stock Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Ask for the exact stock
INT. WORKROOM - DAY
Set the closed tin on a clear bench and photograph its label, lot or batch code, supplier name and any handling notes before opening it.Ask the supplier for exact emulsion identity, 35mm format, perforation type, nominal speed information, intended process and rem-jet status; write down the response rather than paraphrasing from memory.Keep the supplier’s original packaging and paperwork together. Mark any field still unknown as UNKNOWN; do not let a plausible name become a fact.Use a notebook row for each fact: supplier wording, date confirmed and source document. Preserve the original wording where perforation or base terminology is unfamiliar; ask a follow-up rather than translating it into a guessed camera compatibility claim.Do not skip this. Do not open, expose or load unidentified film as ordinary stock.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Tin identity, batch reference and each requested technical fact are recorded, or the material is isolated pending confirmation.
Check the whole chain
INT. CAMERA BENCH - LATER
Check the loader manual for compatible bulk-roll dimensions and loading arrangement; check each cartridge type for spool attachment and felt-trap condition.Confirm the intended camera accepts the cartridge and perforation format; ask the receiving lab whether it accepts this exact stock and process, especially if rem-jet is present.Separate this tin physically from known C-41 rolls and label the work area with the unresolved process question until written confirmation arrives.Keep the bulk tin closed until compatibility is established. A listing title or seller nickname is not an emulsion specification. If the supplier cannot identify the material, record the gap and choose a known stock for the intended camera and lab.Do not skip this. Do not send unannounced rem-jet or unidentified cine film into ordinary C-41 service.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
A written compatibility chain covers tin, loader, cartridge, camera and named receiving lab.
ACT 02
Lights out
Load the loader safely
Load the bulk roll in darkness required by film and loader instructions. Panchromatic stock is not red-safelight safe. Check leaks, clean the area and practise with waste film. Follow the specific trap and door sequence. Some loaders fog end sections: mark them rather than promising a universal usable count.

Rehearse with waste film
INT. LOADING ROOM - BEFORE DARK
Inspect the empty loader, door, light trap and spool path in ordinary room light; clean only as its instructions allow and remove dust or scraps.Practise the actual door, trap and winding sequence with expendable film while the room is lit; note the orientation and where the mechanism catches.Clear the bench of sharp objects, food and unrelated film. Put the bulk tin, leader, scissors and receiving cartridge in fixed positions you can find by touch.Inspect the light trap against the cartridge maker’s criteria, not by bending or scraping the felt. A shell that has been previously used may hide a damaged trap. Store accepted and rejected shells in visibly different containers.Do not skip this. Panchromatic film is not red-safelight safe. Use the darkness required by the film and loader instructions.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
The operator can complete the loader’s sequence with waste film and account for every tool before fresh stock is opened.
Use the required darkness
INT. LOADING ROOM - DARK
Turn off or exclude all light as required by the manufacturer; allow eyes no assumed safe glow and do not use a red lamp unless the exact stock explicitly permits it.Open the tin and loader only in the instructed order. Feed the film through its specified route without pulling against a trap or touching the image area.If the route jams, stop. Do not illuminate or tug blindly; use the maker’s recovery procedure or keep the film protected until you can resolve it in darkness. After processing the test, inspect the leader and transport marks as well as the images. Note whether the camera advanced consistently and whether the lab reported unusual handling. Do not extrapolate one test into a guarantee for another camera.Do not skip this. Any unverified light leak can fog stock. Do not improvise a safelight test on valuable film.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Fresh film is enclosed in the loader, the door and light trap are restored as instructed, and the tin is protected.

ACT 03
The reusable witness
Build a sound cartridge
Check cartridge traps, spool engagement and attachment. Worn felt is not a saving. Use the loader’s instructions for length; dial settings cannot promise every camera’s exposure count. Test the first cartridge and transport. Label stock, batch, nominal speed, working EI and process immediately. Keep different emulsions physically separated.
Exhibit 03 · Inspect the cartridge Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Inspect the cartridge
INT. BENCH - CARTRIDGE INSPECTION
Inspect the cartridge shell, felt trap, spool and attachment point; reject cracked shells, lifted felt or uncertain spool engagement.Attach the leader by the cartridge or loader method, keeping the connection secure without adding tape or material the mechanism may snag.Use the loader’s own length-setting instructions. Record the dial or setting used, but do not translate it into a guaranteed frame count. For each loaded cartridge, record the date and operator. If a roll is returned unexposed, mark that status on the canister instead of relying on a memory of whether the counter moved.Do not skip this. Worn felt or loose attachment can admit light or leave film in the camera.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Only intact, compatible cartridges proceed; rejected shells are set aside and clearly marked.
Test before multiplying
INT. LOADING ROOM - DARK
With the required darkness maintained, operate the loader as directed and stop when its instructed length mechanism indicates completion.Cut or finish the leader using the loader method, then close the cartridge without exposing the wound film. Avoid squeezing the shell or forcing the spool.Repeat a first test cartridge only after confirming winding and transport on a suitable camera without risking important photographs. Process that test with the agreed route.Give the lab a concise handover sheet that travels with the order and repeats the identifying data on each cartridge. Keep a copy at home; outer packaging can be removed before the film reaches the processing bench.Do not skip this. Loader leader loss and camera frame counts vary; do not promise a universal count.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
A test cartridge is sealed, its loader setting recorded and its actual transport and usable result noted after processing.
ACT 04
The processing interview
Ask before you send
Confirm exact-stock acceptance with the lab, especially rem-jet. Unannounced rem-jet can contaminate C-41 equipment and other work. Use Kodak guidance or the lab’s confirmed process, never guessed conversion times. Cross-processing is an experiment. Negativo can link a custom stock and batch to cartridges; keep plain labels for offline evidence.

INT. LABEL BENCH - DAY
Label each cartridge immediately with stock identity, batch, nominal speed information and the chosen working EI, clearly distinguishing a tested EI from a guess.Add exact process and rem-jet status in plain language; include a unique cartridge identifier that also appears in the notebook.Keep different emulsions in separate, marked containers. Update the record if a cartridge is split, tested or assigned a different exposure index. If a test is processed outside the intended process, label it as a controlled experiment and identify who approved the route. Keep experimental rolls separate from ordinary family or commissioned work.Keep the loader setting beside the batch record, not on a loose scrap that can be mistaken for another emulsion. If the setting changes, note the reason and identify which cartridges came from each setting.Do not skip this. Do not label experimental EI as manufacturer-rated speed.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Every cartridge can be matched to its source batch and process without relying on memory.
Keep the batch trail
INT. LAB COUNTER - DAY
Before handover, contact the lab with exact stock, batch if available, process and rem-jet status; ask whether it accepts that material and how it wants it packaged.Get the acceptance and any special handling directions in writing. If no lab confirms compatibility, retain the roll or seek a qualified specialist.Mark the order as an experiment if processing differs from the stock’s intended process; keep the lab response with the cartridge record. When a new batch arrives, compare its code and supplier response with the previous batch record. Similar-looking tins can contain different stock; never copy the previous label without checking. When trimming the leader, follow the loader’s specified cut shape and leave no loose fragment in the mechanism. Sweep away scraps only after the loader is closed and the fresh roll protected.Do not skip this. Never guess a conversion process or send unknown cine stock as routine C-41.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Named lab acceptance, exact process and cartridge identifiers are documented before shipment.
