NEGATIVO.ES · LAB № 7 · A PHOTOGRAPHIC INVESTIGATION
ONE BAG, MANY FORMATS
The bag holds every format. It does not remember which one you put in which camera.
A practical mixed-format kit: compatibility, labels, spools and lab handover. A practical shooting script in four acts and eight scenes. The steps come first; the reference notes stay in the case file.

ACT 01
Inventory the suspects
Start with compatibility
List every body, insert and compatible format. Check manuals, not silhouettes. 120 and 220 can share spool families but differ in length and backing paper; pressure plates and counters may matter. A 120 body is not automatically 220-ready. Separate sheet holders, instant packs and cartridges. Brand names prove nothing.

Pair body, insert and film
INT. INVENTORY TABLE — DAY
List each camera body, insert and the format it accepts; verify compatibility in its manual rather than by silhouette. Distinguish 120 from 220 even where spool families overlap: roll length, backing paper, pressure plate or counter requirements can differ by body.Make one line per body and actual insert or back. Consult the relevant manual for film support, loading arrangement and any pressure-plate or counter setting that the combination requires.Put incompatible or uncertain accessories aside before packing. Similar-looking spools and brand names are not evidence that the loaded combination will work.Do not skip this. A 120 camera is not automatically 220-ready.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Every camera-format pairing is verified.
Separate look-alikes
INT. ACCESSORY CHECK — DAY
Match each body with its own batteries, caps, darkslides and required take-up spool. Check the empty spool before departure and note model-specific fittings. Separate sheet-film holders, instant packs and cartridges instead of treating every object that looks roll-sized as interchangeable.Keep 120 and 220 in separately labelled groups and identify which equipment explicitly supports each. Do not let the common-looking spool become a substitute for checking backing-paper and counter requirements.Label cartridges, instant packs and sheet holders by actual format too. Pack only combinations you can identify and load correctly rather than carrying mystery spares for later negotiation.Do not skip this. Brand names and physical resemblance prove no compatibility.

ACT 02
Pack the missing piece
Bring the dull essentials
Check for the empty take-up spool before leaving. Pack body-specific batteries, caps and required darkslides. Separate fresh and exposed film in labelled pouches; protect from unwinding, heat and moisture. Follow travel guidance. Find a sheltered, clean loading spot. Roadside dust does not become harmless when you call it documentary.

Check the empty spool
INT. PACKING STATION — DAY
Separate fresh and exposed film in clearly marked pouches. Protect stock from unwinding, heat and moisture, and follow relevant travel guidance. Pack enough labels and a written inventory; choose a clean, sheltered loading place rather than improvising beside road dust.Open empty equipment before departure and confirm the required take-up spool is present. Check body-specific battery types, caps and darkslides against the kit list while there is time to replace a missing item.Keep required small accessories with their matching camera. A spare that fits a different body does not complete this one’s loading kit.Do not skip this. Dust does not become harmless because the trip is documentary.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Fresh and exposed stock cannot be confused.
Divide the bag
INT. LOADING RECORD — DAY
At loading, record camera or back ID, stock, format and EI. Use the camera manual and suitable darkness whenever transferring loose film requires it. Keep the written entry with the roll identity rather than trusting a later reconstruction from the bag contents.Choose clearly distinct fresh and exposed pouches. Add a separate category for film still inside a camera so an unfinished roll cannot be counted as ready for the lab.Keep film away from heat and moisture and secure exposed roll ends as instructed. Choose a clean sheltered loading place; do not let convenience turn blowing dust into part of the mechanism.Do not skip this. Never transfer loose film in daylight.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Each loaded roll has a camera and stock record.
ACT 03
One camera, one statement
Label on the spot
At loading, record camera or back, stock, EI and format. Label exposed rolls immediately. State unusual processing plainly and confirm acceptance: the lab should not infer ECN-2, E-6 or C-41 from a wrapper. Never transfer loose film between cameras in daylight; consult the manual and use suitable darkness.
Exhibit 03 · Make the load record immediately Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Make the load record immediately
INT. UNUSUAL PROCESS — DAY
For any stock requiring a nonstandard process, write the process request explicitly and confirm the lab accepts it before shooting. Do not expect a wrapper or stock name to make the lab infer ECN-2, E-6 or C-41 correctly. Keep that request linked to the roll.Record the actual camera or back ID, stock, format and working EI as soon as loading is confirmed. Keep the physical label and your note consistent before moving to another body. When switching cameras, read the record and meter setting again. Never transfer loose film in daylight to make the notebook match what you wish you had loaded.Do not skip this. Do not invent a process or assume a substitute.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Process capability is agreed before handover.
Name the process
INT. EXPOSED-ROLL CONTROL — DAY
Label exposed rolls immediately with format, camera identity and processing request. Move them to the exposed pouch and update the trip ledger. A half-remembered camera assignment is not enough when several formats and process types share one bag.Write the intended process next to every stock, especially cine or reversal material. Confirm exact-stock acceptance with the receiving lab rather than relying on a familiar wrapper colour.Keep experimental processing clearly separated from a standard order. If the film’s identity or rem-jet status is unresolved, pause the handover and ask for confirmation.Do not skip this. Do not leave exposed rolls unmarked in a mixed pouch.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Ledger and physical roll agree.
ACT 04
The evidence goes home
Reconcile the bag
Reconcile exposed rolls with trip notes before handover. Keep the order reference and confirm physical-film return. Match every returned item and scan to the list. A bag photograph is not an inventory. Negativo can hold the mixed-format ledger if you use it; it should reduce remembering, not create another packing ritual.
Exhibit 04 · Count before handover Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Count before handover
INT. RETURN RECONCILIATION — DAY
Before lab handover, reconcile each exposed roll against the trip notes. Retain the order reference and confirm whether physical film will be returned. Record the expected scans and any special handling so a missing roll or mismatch can be investigated from evidence.Match the exposed pouch roll by roll against your loading notes. Separate unfinished cameras from finished rolls and resolve missing or duplicate identifiers before handing the bag over.Make a handover manifest and retain the order reference. Photograph sealed labelled packages if useful, without exposing film or making a photograph your only count record.Do not skip this. A photograph of the packed bag is not an inventory.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Every submitted roll appears on the order list.
Reconcile both deliveries
INT. HOMECOMING AUDIT — DAY
On return, compare each physical item and scan with the ledger and order reference. Record discrepancies before filing negatives. A digital inventory can help, but it should mirror the labels and reduce memory work rather than create a second unmaintained system.Count physical film and scan folders separately against the manifest. A download link is one checkpoint; it does not prove that the returned negatives or remaining rolls are accounted for.Keep gaps and split deliveries explicit. Contact the lab with the roll identifier and order reference rather than silently marking the whole mixed-format trip complete.Do not skip this. Do not detach labels before reconciliation.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Returned items and scans are accounted for.
