SHEET FILM & THE DARKSLIDE
A single sheet, a large camera and one thin piece of metal between the picture and daylight.
Large-format holders, total-dark loading, darkslide discipline and sheet-by-sheet records. A practical shooting script in four acts and eight scenes. The steps come first; the reference notes stay in the case file.

ACT 01
The empty holder
Check it before darkness
Check holder size, camera fit, traps and retainers; clean empty holders without damaging them. Practise with a sacrificial sheet. Find emulsion orientation in the actual film’s notch diagram, not memory. Standard panchromatic sheets need total darkness for loading. A red safelight does not become safe because the holder is large.
Exhibit 01 · Inspect the empty holder Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Inspect the empty holder
INT. CAMERA BENCH - DAY
Check that the holder format matches the camera back and that the holder seats without force; inspect its body, darkslide track, light traps and sheet retainers.Clean an empty holder only by its maker’s instructions. Look for dust, burrs, damaged felt or a slide that binds; remove doubtful holders from service.Practise inserting and withdrawing the darkslide and handling a sacrificial sheet in room light before using fresh film.Check the holder’s darkslide for a flat edge and reliable stop, then verify that it fits the track without scraping. Do not lubricate or alter it unless the manufacturer provides that maintenance procedure.Do not skip this. Do not use a holder with a damaged light trap or a darkslide that will not fully protect the sheet.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Each holder has a fit check and moves smoothly with its slide fully seated.
Locate the emulsion reference
INT. WORK TABLE - DAY
Read the actual film package or manufacturer notch diagram and determine emulsion orientation from that product’s reference.Choose a unique holder ID and mark sides A and B in a durable, visible way that does not obstruct the camera or holder.Write a status convention for each side, such as loaded/unexposed versus exposed, and make it independent of slide-handle colour.Keep a loading diagram beside the work area for practice in light; once darkness begins, rely on the rehearsed hand positions and fixed placement. Do not add a second film box or holder to the working surface mid-load.Do not skip this. Panchromatic sheet film requires total darkness for loading; a red safelight is not a universal safe light.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Holder IDs, side labels and the exact film notch reference are written down before loading.
ACT 02
The silent room
Load by the maker’s instructions
Prepare a clean darkroom or enclosure large enough for the sheets. Remove sharp objects; protect fresh stock. Follow holder instructions: seat film under guides, close the flap and fully replace the slide. Keep batches separate. Do not touch image areas or force curled film through an unfamiliar holder. Practise first.
Exhibit 02 · Prepare the dark workspace Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Prepare the dark workspace
INT. DARKROOM - PREPARATION
Set a clean surface large enough for the film box, holder and hands; remove sharp tools, food, drink and unrelated fresh stock.Place the empty holder and film box in consistent positions and rehearse their locations with eyes closed while the room is lit.Use a darkroom or light-tight enclosure that meets the film and holder instructions; verify the room is fully dark before opening stock.Load one sheet at a time and pause to confirm the holder flap has closed before moving it. Keep the film box oriented consistently so fresh sheets are never confused with sheets already placed in holders.Do not skip this. Do not open the film box until required darkness has been established.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
The workspace is clear, spatially rehearsed and confirmed dark before fresh sheets are exposed to the loading environment.
Seat, close, protect
INT. DARKROOM - TOTAL DARKNESS
Open the package and identify the sheet orientation by the exact notch diagram already consulted; avoid touching the emulsion or image area.Following the holder maker’s instructions, slide one sheet under the correct guides and seat it flat without forcing a curl or corner.Close the holder flap and fully replace its darkslide; keep the remaining sheets protected and distinct from loaded holders. If a sheet catches, do not pull from a corner or bend it into the guides. Maintain darkness, withdraw only as the holder instructions allow, and correct the obstruction before attempting the next sheet.Do not skip this. If orientation or seating is uncertain, do not expose the sheet; keep it protected and resolve in darkness.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
The loaded holder is closed, slide fully inserted, and its ID and side are recorded as loaded/unexposed.

ACT 03
The two-sided alibi
Choose a status convention
Choose and write down one exposed/unexposed convention; handle colours are not universal. Identify holder and side A/B separately. Follow camera and shutter manuals: compose, focus, close shutter, set exposure, seat holder, withdraw correct slide, expose, reinsert with your marker. Interrupted? Check the record before making an accidental second exposure.
Exhibit 03 · Check before withdrawal Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Check before withdrawal
EXT. CAMERA POSITION - DAY
Compose and focus with the camera’s ground glass and follow the camera and shutter manuals; close the shutter before preparing the holder.Set and verify the exposure using the intended meter reading and lens controls, then seat the identified holder side without disturbing camera position.Read the holder ID and side aloud or check the written log before withdrawing the correct darkslide. After setting exposure, verify shutter cocking and lens setting by the camera manual; this check is separate from identifying the holder side. Keep the withdrawn slide immediately at hand rather than placing it among other slides.Do not skip this. Never withdraw a darkslide until the shutter is closed and the intended side is confirmed.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
The camera is ready, shutter closed, exposure set and selected holder side independently verified.
Expose and restore the barrier
EXT. CAMERA POSITION - CONTINUOUS
Withdraw only the selected side’s slide completely, keeping it in hand and protected from loss or mix-up.Make the exposure according to the camera and shutter instructions; do not alter the sequence based on a guessed handle colour.Reinsert the slide fully and update that holder side’s status in the ledger before turning to another holder. If exposure is interrupted by a changing subject or mechanical issue, restore the slide if possible and mark the side status uncertain. Decide whether to expose again only after checking camera operation and the written record.Do not skip this. If interrupted or unsure whether an exposure occurred, stop and consult the record; avoid an accidental double exposure.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Slide is fully restored and the exact holder-side exposure is logged before the next operation.
ACT 04
Unload the evidence
Keep sheets identifiable
Unload in the film’s required darkness into a clean, identified arrangement. Keep fresh and exposed sheets distinct without daylight inspection. Match holder, side, subject, exposure and processing request. Your lab must be able to maintain that separation. A sheet ledger suffices; a generic digital frame counter cannot replace holder-side identity.
Exhibit 04 · Unload in darkness Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions
Unload in darkness
INT. DARKROOM - UNLOADING
Prepare separate, clean, identified destinations for exposed sheets and unused stock before opening a holder. In the film’s required total darkness, remove each exposed sheet according to holder instructions without touching the image area.Keep exposed sheets distinct from fresh sheets using the prepared arrangement; do not use daylight inspection to identify them. Before unloading, write the intended exposed-sheet count and the IDs expected. After unloading, reconcile each sheet and each still-loaded holder side while the area remains dark. For field work, keep the ledger in a protected place and transfer each exposure entry as soon as practical. A note left until the end of the day can lose the distinction between two similar subjects.Do not skip this. Maintain total darkness through unloading and packaging unless the exact film instructions specify otherwise.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Exposed sheets are protected and physically separated from unused stock, with no reliance on visual inspection.
Keep each side traceable
INT. LAB PACKING TABLE - DAY
Match every sheet to holder ID, side, subject, exposure note and processing request in the ledger.Package sheets as the receiving lab requests, preserving separation and labels; confirm the lab can maintain side-level identity.Retain a copy of the sheet ledger and note any holder side that was loaded but never exposed or whose status remains uncertain.Package sheets in the order and orientation requested by the receiving lab, using identifiers that stay with each sheet or protected group. Confirm that tape, sleeves or labels cannot contact or mark the emulsion. If a holder is removed from the camera before the slide is restored, shield it immediately and verify slide position before any further handling. Do not assume the holder remained light-tight because it was carried carefully.Do not skip this. A generic frame counter cannot replace holder-side identity; disclose uncertainty rather than guessing.
EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON
Every processed sheet can be traced to one holder side and exposure record.
