THE SPARE THAT BECAME THREE

One back for colour. One for black and white. One for whatever you swore you would remember.

Interchangeable backs, darkslides and a reliable back-by-back film ledger. A practical shooting script in four acts and eight scenes. The steps come first; the reference notes stay in the case file.

THE STORY SO FAR

The lie. The cover-up. The evidence.

  • 1 The lie You will recognise the loaded back by weight, smell or confidence.
  • 2 The cover-up Every back gets called “the spare”.
  • 3 The evidence Three identical shells can hold three entirely different exposure decisions.
  • IN ORDER OF APPEARANCE

    The cast.

  • 01 The shell PERMANENT IDENTITY Give each back a stable name that survives a change of film.
  • 02 The insert ACTUAL COMPATIBILITY Check body, shell, insert and format against the equipment instructions.
  • 03 The darkslide LIGHT BARRIER Follow the model’s mounting sequence. An interlock is not an invitation to force it.
  • 04 The ledger THREE STATEMENTS Keep stock, EI and interrupted frame position tied to the correct back.

    ACT 01

    Give each suspect a name

    Make the identity physical

Label the actual shells Back 1, 2 and 3; use the same identifiers in notes. Record format and matching insert. Inspect seals, transport and darkslides before loading. Follow each system’s mounting instructions, not another camera’s folklore. A leaking spare is merely a second way to lose a roll.

    Name the shell

    INT. BACK IDENTIFICATION — DAY

  • Label the actual shells Back 1, Back 2 and Back 3, then use exactly those identifiers in notes. Record format and matching insert for each. Inspect seals, transport and darkslides before loading, following each system’s mounting instructions independently.
  • Put a readable identifier on each shell without obstructing controls, joints or light seals. Use the same name in the notebook so Back 1 remains Back 1 when its film changes.
  • Record the matching insert and format separately. If you exchange inserts, update that pairing before loading rather than assuming the shell name proves compatibility.
  • Do not skip this. A leaking spare is another route to losing a roll.

EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

    Physical labels match the ledger.

    Inspect while empty

    INT. MOUNTING PROCEDURE — DAY

  • Consult the camera and back instructions for mounting and removal. Identify each latch and required sequence before the back is loaded. Do not borrow a procedure from a different body merely because the backs look alike; confirm that the fitted back is secure before operating.
  • Inspect empty seals, slide and transport according to the system manual. Check that the intended insert belongs with the shell and that any observed fault is resolved before fresh film enters.
  • Do not repair a doubtful seal by forcing the insert tighter. Set questionable equipment aside and use a known sound back for work you cannot repeat.
  • Do not skip this. Never force a latch or mounting point.

    ACT 02

    The metal alibi

    Use the interlocks properly

Read the darkslide and shutter-cocking sequence. Interlocks differ; never force them. Insert and secure the required slide before removing a loaded back, then protect it from accidental withdrawal. A counter does not prove film is present. Consult loading indicators and your record, without opening the loaded shell to investigate.

Exhibit 02 · Confirm the sequence Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions

    Confirm the sequence

    INT. DARKSLIDE SEQUENCE — DAY

  • Read the documented darkslide and shutter-cocking sequence for this combination. Before removing a loaded back, insert and secure its required slide as instructed; protect it from accidental withdrawal. Record the back state so another operator does not mistake a counter for proof of film.
  • Read the actual mounting, slide and shutter-cocking instructions before a swap. Rehearse the release sequence with empty equipment and identify each required control by touch.
  • If two systems are in the bag, keep their instructions distinct. Familiarity with one camera’s interlock is not permission to perform the same sequence on another.
  • Do not skip this. Interlocks differ; never force them.

EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Slide state and back identity are checked aloud.

    Stop at resistance

    INT. LOAD CONFIRMATION — DAY

  • Load each insert according to its own manual and record stock, format and EI against the back ID. Check only the prescribed loading indicators. A counter position alone cannot establish that film is present, correctly threaded or associated with the label.
  • Insert and secure the required darkslide before removing the loaded back, using the manual’s sequence. Confirm it is seated rather than judging solely by the visible handle.
  • At unexpected resistance, stop and check alignment and prescribed control state. Do not defeat an interlock, force a release or open a loaded shell to determine what it contains.
  • Do not skip this. Do not open a loaded shell to investigate.

    BEFORE MOUNTING

Read the label. Set the meter.

No universal frame count. Camera, insert and format decide. Follow the actual darkslide and interlock instructions.

    ACT 03

    The switch

    Meter for this back

Before every swap, read the back label, stock and EI. Set the meter for this roll, not the last one. Treat counter position as a reference; actual camera, insert and format determine exposures. Do not paste in a 35mm default. Note the last subject when leaving a roll unfinished.

    Read before mounting

    INT. SWAP BRIEFING — DAY

  • Before every swap, read the back label and the stock/EI entry, then set the meter for that roll. Confirm darkslide and camera sequence for the specific equipment. Treat the counter as a reference; camera, insert and format—not a generic default—determine the expected exposures.
  • Read the mounted back’s physical ID, stock and working EI. Set the meter for this roll before exposing; the previous back’s speed does not follow automatically.
  • Check the recorded loaded status using the model’s permitted indicators. A counter position alone is not proof that film is present, and opening the shell is not a safe diagnostic.
  • Do not skip this. Do not carry over a 35 mm assumption.

    Mark the interruption

    INT. UNFINISHED ROLL — DAY

  • When leaving a roll unfinished, note the last recognisable subject and the back ID. Record the counter position only as a reference. Keep the back securely closed and follow the manufacturer’s procedure for its state; this note lets the next operator resume without inventing a frame history.
  • Write the last recognisable subject and the displayed counter reference before the unfinished back leaves the body. Keep this note attached to that back’s load event.
  • On return, compare the label and interruption note before proceeding. If status remains uncertain, pause rather than advancing or exposing simply to make the counter seem familiar.
  • Do not skip this. A counter is not a substitute for the last-subject note.

Next operator can identify the unfinished roll.

    ACT 04

    The final handover

    Close each back separately

Unload by the manual. Label the exposed roll with back ID and processing request, then update its ledger after physical removal. Another empty back does not erase this back’s history. Each load is a separate event. Negativo’s back view can mirror the labels; the equipment remains the fastest screen.

Exhibit 04 · Unload one back at a time Procedure illustration · follow the exact equipment instructions

Unload one back at a time

INT. UNLOAD AND LABEL — DAY

  • Unload by the manual’s procedure, then label the exposed roll with its back ID and processing request. Update the ledger only after the film is physically removed and identified. Keep the empty back’s status separate; an empty shell does not erase the previous load’s history.
  • Finish and remove the roll as the manual directs, working on one back at a time. Secure the exposed roll and label it with the back identity and intended processing request immediately.
  • Keep an unfinished roll in its protected back, not in the exposed-roll pouch. The presence of another empty back does not change this back’s physical state.
  • Do not skip this. Do not infer removal from an empty-looking counter.

EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Roll, back ID and ledger entry reconcile.

    Close the correct record

    INT. FINAL HANDOVER — DAY

  • Present the lab with distinct roll labels and processing instructions, then reconcile the receipt against the ledger. Keep each load as a separate event, even when the same back was reused. The labels on equipment and film should agree before anything enters shared custody.
  • Mark the specific load finished only after physical removal is confirmed. Keep the closed record so its exposures and lab order are not overwritten by the next stock.
  • Before reloading, verify the now-empty back and correct insert again. Start a new load event with its own stock and EI instead of editing the previous roll’s history.
  • Do not skip this. Do not merge histories because the shell was reused.

EVIDENCE · BEFORE YOU MOVE ON

Every submitted roll maps to one recorded back load.
